Berklee College of Music Announces Recipients of First Ever Online Music Scholarship; Five Recipients Chosen from Hundreds of Talented Musicians from Around the World

BOSTON --(Business Wire)-- Oct. 27, 2004 -- Berkleemusic.com, the online extension school of Berklee College of Music, today announced the recipients of the world's first-ever online music scholarship program. After reviewing applications and demos from talented musicians worldwide, five gifted musicians and future music industry leaders were selected that exhibited significant promise, achievement, and inspired life stories. Each recipient will receive a scholarship that is named after, and backed by, some of the most respected names in modern music: Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler, guitar virtuoso Steve Vai, acoustic guitar wizard Patty Larkin, composer Alf Clausen, and songwriter Tom Snow.

"The amount and quality of the applications we received for our scholarship program was truly astonishing," said Dave Kusek, Vice President of Berkleemusic.com, "We're thrilled to be able to offer access to Berklee's proven curriculum and world-renowned faculty to talented music students worldwide that otherwise wouldn't be able to attend our physical school."

Scholarships will be presented to recipients from Pakistan, South Africa, and three cities across the United States; and will include six online music courses, up to two years of study, at Berkleemusic.com as well as all necessary Berklee Press books required for those courses. Recipients will also be afforded the opportunity to enroll in Berkleemusic's NEASC-accredited college credit certificate programs, and earn college credit that they can transfer to their local college or university.

This year's scholarship recipients include:

Arooj Aftab; Steve Vai Scholarship - Born and raised in Pakistan, Arooj is an entirely self-taught female guitarist in a culture where opportunities for music study, especially for women, are severely limited. Arooj is planning to use her formal Berkleemusic education to develop her songwriting skills and ultimately change the way that female musicians are perceived in her native country.

Brett Richard Keintz; Tom Snow Scholarship - A Fulbright Scholar who resides in Madison, Wis., Brett has created a forward-thinking blueprint for a music company dedicated to addressing music piracy and furthering the development of the digital medium of music. Brett will use his Berkleemusic education to take an active role in developing a future business model for the music industry.

Timothy Peter Kroon; Steven Tyler Scholarship - At the age of 19, Timothy, who lives in South Africa, is an accomplished singer who has mastered guitar, bass, piano, violin, and drums. He has played in popular modern rock bands, professionally and non-professionally, since he was 14 years old. Timothy plans to focus his Berkleemusic scholarship on production courses that will sharpen his music engineering skills and allow him to become a more complete musician.

Monica Orth; Patty Larkin Scholarship - A resident of Lowell, Mass., Monica's career goal is to write and produce cutting edge electronic dance music. She began working on her first music project in October 2002 with no training. Soon after, Monica began taking drum lessons to learn about rhythm, and enrolled in piano lessons to gain a more complete understanding of melody and harmony. She is confident that her Berkleemusic scholarship will help her to ultimately make the transition from computer programmer to full-time musician.

Jose Luis Revelo; Alf Clausen Scholarship - A native of Columbia and world traveler, Jose now lives in Jersey City, NJ, and creates jingles and scores for some of the top music production houses in New York City. He pursued piano training at Panama's National Conservatory, and at the age of 13 landed a job at the top jingle house in Panama. He plans to use his Berkleemusic education to help him open his own music house in New York, where he will create music for commercials, scores for television and film, and songwriting and production for Latin artists.

Steve Vai Scholarship

Essay:

At first glance, a girl with a guitar is not an image that will make a western viewer sit up and take notice. But trials, success and achievements must be viewed in the context of the world that defines us, and in my world the guitar toting girl is a rarity. My inspirations in music come from many things that are important to me, like the thrill of performance and the joy of playing well, and the creative fulfillment that comes with making art. But it is my dedication that differentiates me from many of my peers; despite all that is denied to me in terms of opportunity, support and professional training, I have learned through my own resourcefulness and passion. It is this drive to learn and surmount the physical limitations of my music that guides me, and has brought me to put pen to paper in this essay and give you a small window into my story, and the way I hope it turns out.

Pakistan has stumbled upon the new millennium in a bit of a conundrum; on one hand there are conservative elements advocating arguably outdated social norms, while on the other there are power brokers who perpetuate their hold in the poverty of those they are hired to serve. Throughout the centuries, art and music in particular has been subservient to this power dynamic, ebbing and flowing with the wishes of the ruler. But in today's world, I feel my place as an artist is a necessity to showcase creativity and provide a forum for social engagement where there is none, and it is this philosophy that has convinced me to make my dream of being a professional musician a priority.

I took over my school's music club presidency in my senior year at high school, and made a lackluster choir singer club into one of the most dynamic student music movements in my city. Through the efforts of my school's music club, girls in many other schools in Lahore are beginning to look at music as a creative process and a means of expression, rather than through a screen of social stigmas attached to it. I am the first female guitarist/soloist of my age-group to emerge on the music scene in Pakistan, in fact one of a handful in any age-group, and can take pride in saying that I was entirely self taught and learnt to play complicated covers on my own. Even when it comes to recording and mixing my own songs, I prefer going hands on with the software myself rather than having someone else do it for me. My biggest break came with my song “Walking” being played and re-played on radio stations throughout the country. It is an achievement I am proud of, and one that has perhaps given me the confidence in myself to pursue my goals. Having said that, it is obvious that there are limits to being self taught, and I'm honest enough to know that it's just the tip of the iceberg. Also, most of eastern music is based on ideology, conceptualism and inspiration; with little theory involved. I want to broaden my musical horizons, learn about the science that makes music, the art that inspires it and the minds that create it, and I want to be good enough to leave a lasting mark on a nascent industry that is set to capture the public's imagination in my country. The online courses offered by Berklee have given me the first step towards this goal.

Changing the world with a 6-string is all very well, and it has been done before, but in terms of goals I tend to be much more pragmatic. I may never be the next Diego Rivera of music, but I at least want to be knowledgeable and professional enough to do justice to my work. The opportunities available to study music in-depth in Pakistan are severely limited, especially for women, so I feel that a formal music education from abroad is the only recourse available to me. I heard of Berklee from an alumnus, Mr. Mekaal Hassan, and I've decided to apply to Berklee for an undergraduate degree in Writing and Production for the 2005 fall term. In the meantime, I'm taking a year off to build a base for myself in music so I can be well equipped to deal with the stressful demands and workload of college. Going through Berklee's online courses, I can see no better way to build my skills up in the year I have ahead of me. In conjunction with my keyboard and eastern classical (vocal and sitar) lessons, I hope I'll be a good candidate for admission in the next academic year. Through Berklee, and the experience its online sessions can equip me with, I wish to fulfill my goal of ultimately studying music full-time and professionally, with hope of finding my niche as a professional musician and artiste, and perhaps even change the world - one tune at a time.

I really don't know much about her, but she's got one heck of an amazing story. HUGE Congratulations Arooj, my sincere prayers that you excel in music and fulfil all your goals! Its astounding to come so far with such limited resources, especially in Pakistan where social pressures are another battle; unbelievable. I'm sure i speak for everyone when i say you're really doing Pakistan proud. Hurray for Girl Power!
